Plugging the device to a USB 3.1 port should work just fine but does not provide a higher performance. The potential benefit is that the host controller is newer, has better drivers and is made to sustain high bandwidth and power.
In general, the switch to USB3.1 will be made in two steps, one is switching to the new reversible connector which is more durable and easier to use.
