Btw, just updated to Windows 8.1 and found a little bug that makes the calibration result look Poor even if the tracking and accuracy is good. It relates to the Windows 8 handling of DPI scaling and values exposed on the .Net API. We will have that fixed for the next update.
Statistics: Posted by skataMartin — 30 Apr 2014, 17:02

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the feedback. It's very valuable for us to hear how it behaves. There was some changes introduced in version 31 that went out a little too early. Version 33 seems to have stabilized it and the upcoming release will improve things further.

A new advanced calibration model has been in R&D on a parallel track for several months and is targeted for the v1.0 release. It will bring noticeable improvements.

Before it is ready there will be a couple of iterations for stability and maintenance.
Statistics: Posted by skataMartin — 29 Apr 2014, 16:27

Thanks for the quick update.

Unfortunately, I think I might still be having some problems.

33

After installing 33, I did a calibration. I got one star, I tried again, and I got another one star.

I uninstalled 33, and launched the 28 installation setup. After installing, and doing a calibration, I get poor results. The Eye Tribe server does say that I am using 28.

I again recognize that I have the same point sample time, and number of points that I had in 33, so I again use the Everything search tool to find and delete anything that is related to Eye Tribe. Point sample time, and number of points returned to the defaults, and the screen with the “show at start up” comes back.

28

After this, I do 2 calibrations in 28, and I get five stars each time. (I’m still not sure why I need to delete files in addition to using the normal uninstall procedure to get to what I think is 28, even though it says that I’m in 28 in the server before or after any kind of deletion of files). The tracking is relatively steady.

33

I try 33 again, and I get one star again.

This time, I decide to do the same file deletions that I do when I downgrade to 28.

I uninstall 33, delete any Eye Tribe files, and then install 33.

On the first try, I get five stars. However, when I look at some of the white circles that turn red, the color change to red is flickering on and off very rapidly. It’s more rapid than I’ve ever seen it. It seems to be going on mostly with the top three white circles.

I go back to look at the direct feedback of the current tracking state in the EyeTribe UI (screen on the left with the animated eyes and green background). Here, the eyes are flickering, and disappearing and appearing very fast. The green background starts to slightly turn red at certain times. If I turn on mouse control, it’s pretty wild.

I go to try to send some feedback data. It doesn’t go through, but the progress bar did load a little, and an estimated time was displayed, so that’s better than not starting last time. (I’ll post about it in a separate thread).

I do another calibration, and I get four stars. I said before that the flickering was mostly going on with the top three white circles, but the two side circles were also flickering between white and red pretty fast also.

I don’t see as much flickering right away, so I think something improved. However, the flickering, and rapid appearing/despairing of the animated eyes comes back at certain times.

I do another calibration, and I get five stars. As I stare at the direct feedback, the animated eyes are solid. I look around for a while. Maybe after 15 to 20 seconds, I get a very rapid flickering.

It’s a small sample size, but I think I notice that there are long solid/no flickering periods of time with 33, as opposed to 31, where the flickering was more constant. However, when it does flicker in 33, it’s very rapid, and when you turn on the mouse control, it’s more jumpy than I’ve ever seen it.

I try another calibration, and I get five stars. During this session, I feel like I got to the most precision than anything I’ve ever seen. The offset was, like, under 1 cm at all points.

I try another calibration later, but I get one star.

I try again, and I get another one star. I noticed that before the calibration started, the animated eyes flickered just a bit.

I try 4 more calibrations, and each time, I get one star. On a couple of them, I remember noticing that there was either some flickering before the start of the calibration, or at the end of the calibration. I’m assuming that there was flickering going on during the calibration, and that could be what caused the low results.

This morning, I tried another calibration in 33, and I got five stars. I don’t notice any flickering, so I quickly go to turn on mouse control. The accuracy is very good. After about 15 seconds, I get very rapid flickering again in the feedback again. When I turn on the mouse control, the offset is actually not that bad, but the cursor is rapidly jumping all over the place.

28

I downgrade to 28, and I get a calibration of five stars. There’s no flickering whatsoever. I turn on mouse control to try to compare it to 33. Since there’s no flickering, the mouse cursor is rarely jumping. The accuracy is all right, so perhaps those good experiences with 33 weren’t that much of an improvement, if any. As I continue with 28, I noticed that there is an offset of, maybe, 2 cm offset as the gaze goes along near the topmost region of the screen.

Thanks for reading. I hope I can successfully send a feedback package soon, as my post is still all anecdotal.
Statistics: Posted by skataJeffKang — 12 Apr 2014, 22:01

Hi Jeff and Pf,

Seems that there is an issue with version 0.9.31. This release involved quite a lot of changes, we made some optimizations to reduce the CPU consumption. Unfortunately, it seems that this have affected the tracking robustness. We'll investigate these modifications to locate the issue and get a new version out soon.
Statistics: Posted by skataMartin — 09 Apr 2014, 22:33

I just saw your post, pf, so I went to try downgrading to 28 again this morning.

In my earlier post, I mentioned that I wasn’t sure if I downgraded properly. The reasons were because the number of points was still 16, and the point sample time was at maximum, which are not the default.

So I uninstalled 31 using Revo uninstaller. In addition to uninstalling, I used the “Everything” search program to look for any other Eye Tribe files that I could delete.

I installed 28. This time, it shows that full screen display that says “welcome to the eye tribe developer kit”, with the “show at startup” checkbox at the bottom left-hand corner (I had previously unchecked that box). I went for a calibration, and it looks like I successfully went back to the default calibration settings, as I received fewer points, and the point sample time was faster. So now, I think I successfully downgraded.

This was my first result:

I get a perfect five stars. I try again, and I get another five stars.

In my earlier post, I also mentioned that when I’m looking at the direct feedback of the current tracking state in the EyeTribe UI (screen on the left with the animated eyes, and green background), I noticed that the eyes were flickering, and constantly disappearing and appearing.

With version 28, as I stare at the EyeTribe UI, there’s no flickering whatsoever.

Additionally, it’s a sunny day right now, with lots of ambient light, and I’m still getting five stars.

There’s a stronger chance that version 31 is the reason for the change in my calibration results.

Thanks for posting, pf.
Statistics: Posted by skataJeffKang — 09 Apr 2014, 22:20

I have been jumping between 28 and 31 and it's impossible to get a high calibration score in 31.
Also it seems that the smoothing is gone and the gaze coordinates jump and jitters.
Falling back to 28 helps immensely, I will try and reproduce it in an official sample to make sure it's not something i my code.
Statistics: Posted by skatapf@seriousgames.net — 09 Apr 2014, 11:28

4 to 5 star calibration every time last week; now, can’t break past 2 stars

It’s so strange. For weeks before, I had always been able to get 4 to 5 stars every time for calibration quality. Now, I always get 1 to 2 stars, and I’ll be lucky if I get 3.

I don’t use my glasses with the eye tracker.

I’ve been testing it during evening and night, so there’s very little light (I might get one of those blackout drapes for the day) .

The position of my eye tracker has barely moved. During the time that I was getting 4 to 5 stars, I recall still being able to move the tracker around quite a bit, and still being able to get good calibration.

I’m Asian, and I have brown eyes, which I hear isn’t optimal for eye-tracking.

I use 16 points, and a maximum point sample time. I keep my eyes very wide open during the calibration.

I don’t have any heavy programs that are running when I’m testing the eye tracker.

Regardless of the conditions, they haven’t changed (I don’t think), and it seemed fine just a while ago.

My first thought was that the problems started happening right after the last update of TheEyeTribeSDK-0.9.31-x86. I uninstalled it, and installed the older TheEyeTribeSDK-0.9.28-x86, but I still got poor results (at least I think I successfully downgraded. After opening up in 0.9.28, it remembered my settings of 16 points, and max point sample time, so maybe it didn’t downgrade? Still, I think the downgrade went through, I was operating in 0.9.28, and I was still getting poor results. Therefore, I don’t think it was the update, even though the quality dropped after it.

Currently, when I’m staring at the screen with the green glow, I notice that both the animated eyes are flickering (quickly disappearing and appearing) every couple seconds. I don’t remember if the flickering was happening when I was getting good calibration. Maybe regular flickering is always there, and it’s normal?

Meh..
