Hi

Plugging the device to a USB 3.1 port should work just fine but does not provide a higher performance. The potential benefit is that the host controller is newer, has better drivers and is made to sustain high bandwidth and power.

In general, the switch to USB3.1 will be made in two steps, one is switching to the new reversible connector which is more durable and easier to use. Step two is to make the device USB3.1 compatible (with higher bandwidth) but it is still early days for this as very few device controllers are available and only 5-10% of the computers has it.
