polarizing filter

you did not try to use a polarizing filter on top of the IR with the Pockels effect? It is well suppresses any change of brightness and glare.

Interesting idea, need to read up more on the Pockels effect.

I've played around with a normal polarizing filter, with the appropriate orientation it's fairly effective at reducing environmental glare but there is a significant loss in output. It also adds cost and increased opto-mechanical design complexity. Same goes for lasers with diffuser.

Yes!
However, you can sell this filter as an addition to the device - removable pad on the surface of the IR.
