Our industrial designer who has been working on mounting solutions is out on paternity leave (Scandinavian tradition). We are looking for a temp to come in and continue the work.

We did a custom mount using a 3D printer, essentially a wedge shape with an arm and a screw hole. It turned out to be a little brittle to put out as a product so we decided not to ship anything until we have a better solution.

Another problem is that it requires using adhesives to attach it to the display which not everyone is willing to accept. Another idea would be thin magnetic strip that would attach to a mounting plate which is screwed onto the device, alternatively a clamp-on mechanism that would attach around the back. Problem is that there are so many monitor designs that it's impossible to find a catch-all solution.

What would your preferred solution be? Is adhesive tape ok?

I kinda like the mount used by Tobii's EyeX. It comes with four slim sheet metal (one is enough for use) that can be attached to the screen by adhesives. The eye tracker can easily be hooked to the metal by magnetic force (the metal is cut into a certain shape that matches the back of the eye tracker to make it easy to fit).
Considering the price of a desktop screen is not that high these days, I think using adhesives is not be too big a problem.

It seems logical to me that The Eyetribe adopt a mounting system that is compatible with Tobii EyeX.

We've been exploring magnetic attachment mechanisms but it came to a halt due to the adhesive requirements that would difficult to remove/leave marks on the display. Might be worth revisiting, it's fairly straightforward to design. No promises on compatibility with other vendors gear.. I understand the value of a common mount layout but their design might not be ideal for us.

I tried this solution: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000 ... UTF8&psc=1 Which works great! Except for the fact that the Eye tribe is mounted upside down this way. And it does not seem to work that way. The placement of the camera mount screw hole is very unfortunate for any kind of mounting solution for a monitor since it is on the wrong side of the unit. If it was on top instead of on the bottom it would work great. Having the camera mount on the bottom works great for the included tripod, but for almost any application for the disabled it makes mounting very difficult. I want to start testing software for the disabled, but without an adequate mounting solution, this will by very expensive since I will have to have something made. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, you are not thinking about the problem correctly. This is a very poor solution.

I believe I came up with a viable solution... however, to the chagrin of some folks, it may require piggy backing on the Tobii EyeX. Let me explain:

As some may already know, the EyeX mounting solution is the very convenient. It consists of a magnet which is attached to the back of the eyex, and a thing metal strip that adheres to the bezel of the display. This allows users to snap their controller on and off the machine. This works great for laptops and desktop displays (probably not so good for tablets).

If you already have an EyeX metal strip adhered to your display (like I do), you can go to a hardware store and purchase a "flexible magnetic strip with adhesive" which you can cut to size and adhere to the back of your eyetriber controller! This works great, allowing you to snap the controller on and off the display exactly the same way as the eyex. Presumably, if you do not have an eyex metal strip, you can probably find that at your local hardware store. Along this vein, a similar alternative is to buy double sided "velcro thin fasteners".

There is one caveat to mention. The EyeX does not mount flush to the surface of the display... it has a small < 10 deg angle which tilts the tracker upwards toward the user. Therefore, using the method I describe above might make it difficult to achieve the same tilting perspective. With a (clam shell) laptop it is possible to adjust the angle of the display, thereby adjusting the controller's perspective along with it, but not so with most desktop displays -- their angles are fixed. A little additional tinkering may be required. Those of you that have a Tobii TX300 can empathize with me.

Hope this helps, good luck to everyone!
