The Eye Tribe

I completed my first test of the newer software and it showed some improvement, but the lockup still happened. It worked for ~5 minutes until it locked up this time. The device temporarily disconnected on its own about 3 1/2 minutes in (but restarted successfully). Please see the log below.

I plan to test further on my other computers. I'll also try flashing the device back to firmware 293 and testing again.

I'm going to test again using a fresh installation of Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. This should show whether the issue is due to anything I've installed.

My test with a fresh installation of Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit shows that the issue is not due to a conflict with installed software. The EyeTribe SDK was the only thing installed. The computer was also not connected to the internet. As before, I experienced a lockup after a range of ~15 seconds to a couple of minutes. Please see example logs below:

I'm going to flash the device to firmware 293 and test again.

Okay, so I flashed the device to firmware 293 and then tested a computer running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit that just arrived from the factory today. Unfortunately, the same lockup problem occurred. The device worked long enough to calibrate (with great success--five star quality), but then "froze" with the red LED lights on and no more log output. I then closed the Eye Tribe UI and Server, neither of which produced any more output. See example log below:

I think I'm out of things to test. I've tested across four computers with two firmwares and two SDK versions. There appears to be a Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit incompatibility.

Yup, seems like a faulty data path, we've seen some incompatibility with USB host controllers but this seems to be something else. Could be bad connector, cable, shipping, ESD, PCB etc.

We have shipped many thousands so this is not the expected behavior.

As one last try I've sent you another modified version of 203 that has been verified to work where stream-stopped problem occurred.

If no resolve I would like to arrange a RMA for QC and get you a new/repair.

Note that the device stream pauses and then stops, but sometimes the Eye Tribe Server will notice when I close the Eye Tribe UI after the lockup, resulting in a "Connection removed" message. Other times it doesn't notice at all.

I tested the device out on Windows 7 again for an extended period of time. It tracked my eyes for over an hour without any problems.

I have tested on four computers running this OS across multiple firmwares and SDK versions. I even tested a computer with a fresh re-installation of Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit and a computer that had just arrived from the factory. The device functions perfectly on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit machine, but I have not found a Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit computer that works for longer than a few minutes. I have swapped out cables (including a new one from a third party) and there are no cable problems. Based on my testing, it really does seem like the device has a problem with Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit.

We have a couple more Eye Tribe devices arriving at our lab this week, so I'll follow-up with those to see whether this is a fluke. I'll wait to RMA this device until I've tried out the others.

Appreciate the extensive testing, it is obvious that there is problem with this device and Windows 8. A bit surprising as the stream-stopped so far have occurred mainly on Windows 7 systems with non-Intel USB controllers, especially from NEC/Renesas.

Rasmus at support will arrange for replacement of the unit at your convenience.

Once it gets here I will run it on the test-rig to figure out what the cause is.

I'm also having this stream-stopped issue. I would like to give a try testing the new firmware if that would solve the problem in this case.
